Summer 2015

Good Story Exhibition Catalogue

Good Story, a new exhibit from the celebrated American painter, Amanda Marie, engaged her vast visual language of graphic stencil imagery, creating an experience that is at once comfortingly nostalgic and compellingly bewitching. Imbued with the rascal spirit of street art culture, the work was uncanny – its dissonance alluring, playful, and powerful. Amanda Marie’s compositions layer masterfully painted settings with sewing patterns and sparkly-eyed characters; her signature aesthetic is instantly recognizable.

Best known as a stencilist and large-scale street artist, Amanda Marie received her academic training at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art hosted a 2012 solo exhibition of Amanda Marie’s work and noted that her signature figures, “have been lifted from the pages of a mid-twentieth century children’s book, and have traded the protective home of childhood nostalgia for a slightly more adventurous and unsettling world somewhere between dream and reality.” Amanda Marie’s popular outdoor projects have included Imaginary Girls, Amsterdam 2013, Skinny Dippers, Brooklyn 2013, (which was featured in a scene with Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris and Milla Jovovich in the 2014 movie, Cymbaline), Gravity Kids, San Francisco 2013, and Milk Girls, Greeley, Colorado 2012. Recent exhibitions have included several SCOPE Art Fair solo exhibitions in Miami, in Basel, Switzerland, and a solo exhibition at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco, California, entitled, I Was Just Thinking.

Concurrent with her exhibition at the Quin, Amanda Marie and Hyland Mather were jointly exhibited at JSMA, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Eugene, Oregon. Several of her pieces are currently featured in the Quin's permanent collection, and Amanda Marie also made her mark on the Quin with a signature stencil, visible on the hotel's 57th street façade alongside Blek le Rat’s Andy Warhol.

Good Story featured 9 large-scale canvases and 25 works on paper plus 3 color screen prints of "Animal Nature," each signed by the artist. The exhibit was open to the public in June 2015.
